Day 10 of the rest of my life.

The triage nurse kept calling me sweety, not because I am a sweety, but I am sweety. There is a difference there. Get it yet?? I registered a 540 on the glucose meter. I knew I hadn't been feeling well. After a few hours of a saline drip, I went home. Christmas Eve diagnosis: diabetic.
Since the end of October I have been thirsty. It got progressively worse to the point where I couldn't get enough fluid into me. I was dry all the time and had to run to the bathroom all day long. What ever went in, went out in a matter of minutes. Also I was tired, lethargic, not wanting to do much of anything. (explains my lack of posts since October).
I knew eventually I would become sugar free. Both grandmothers took insulin, parents type 2, uncle, cousin. The doctor thinks the infection I had in Oct tipped the scales for me.
Now what?? Well, portion control, low carb, little sugar, Exchange Diet. I used the diet when I was pregnant, twice. It worked well for my blood sugar back then.
So far today, day 10, I have lost 15 lbs and my eyesight has improved. My nearsighted glassed are useless. I dug deep and found the reading glasses I used with my contacts. Good, huh? The only problem is that I now feel compelled to use eye make-up, like when I wore contacts.
I'll be getting up earlier to fix breakfast, lunch, and take my blood. Oh, and put on make-up.

Knitting like crazy again. Socks for Chloe. After all this time, she tells me she would like some socks.......coming right up.

Ouch, 540! Talk about Santa bringing something you most certainly didn't wish for. So yes, things are different now. But I can already tell you are going to do just great! There is a very supportive diabetic community on-line with blogs and Twitter and even a group on Ravelry. We're here when ever you need someone to lean on!

And now, I can wait to hear more about those socks!! :)

Nope, not a great Christmas gift. As Karen said, start reading! The DOC (Diabetic Online Community) is super at helping each other. We may be even more addictive than Facebook... I'm still fairly new myself, dx'd in '05 (and older than most...!).
And, start walking. It's amazing what even a little exercise will do for you.
(and a photo of the turkey is on my site)

About being diabetic....Welcome to the DarkSide...

;)

It's really not as bad as it sounds (although 540 is kinda...not good..)
